DefendDefenders seeks Communications Officer for office in Kampala

DefendDefenders (East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project) is a regional NGO based in Kampala, Uganda, that seeks to strengthen the work of human rights defenders throughout the sub-region by reducing their vulnerability to the risk of persecution and by enhancing their capacity to effectively defend human rights. DefendDefenders works in Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia/Somaliland, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. DefendDefenders is seeking a highly motivated, self-starting, detail oriented, and well organised Communications Officer to support and promote the work of the organisation. The Communications Officer will be responsible for developing and distributing content on the organisation’s work and maintaining its public profile. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively under pressure, be a good team player, and be willing to travel occasionally, as required.

Civil Rights Defenders is looking for a controller with experience of working with projects

The Stockholm-based NGO Civil Rights Defenders wants to take its Finance Department to the next level and is now looking for a Controller to help develop processes and working methods. As a Controller, you are a key asset in the Finance Department. The main focus is to simplify and improve all financial areas in order to get the very best results out of our new ERP system Maconomy. As a Controller, you will be responsible for a number of departments and act as controller for important projects in close cooperation with your colleagues in Stockholm as well as the rest of the world.

Some of the key activities include

  • Setting up project budgets in consultation with our project and program managers.
  • Financial reporting of our projects to donors and auditors.
  • Supporting department managers in budgeting and forecasting.
  • Responsible for analysing projects and department results in connection with monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
  • Contact person for our departments regarding financial matters.
  • Contributing to our work with new reports and improved controlling processes.
  • Participating in improving the financial work.

We are especially interested in applicants with

  • A Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics, or similar, with a few years working experience in controlling and project reporting.
  • Experience in a project-based work, preferably from a non-profit organisation or consultancy-driven work.
  • Strong interest in pursuing improvement, big or small.
  • Experience in managing ERP systems, such as Maconomy.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and a very experienced Excel user.
  • Very good knowledge of Swedish and English, both written and verbal.

About the position

  • Permanent employment (100%) with an initial six months probation period.
  • The position is based at Civil Rights Defenders’ head office in Stockholm, Sweden.
  • The position may include some travel to Civil Rights Defenders’ local offices.

Norwegian Human Rights Fund seeks Country Director Colombia

The Norwegian Human Rights Fund is looking for a country director in Colombia., which is a newly created post.  Deadline for applications: September 17th, 2019.

Duration: 3 years with possibility of extension

Duty station: Bogota, Colombia. Travel inside the country and follow-up of grants/grantees will be an important part of the work. International travels will also be required.

The tasks include, but are not limited to

  • Lead the process of establishing a team in Colombia (initially 4-5 people) and set up an office.
  • Lead the strategy process for the NHRF for its Colombia work, including fundraising and communication work in line with the NHRF overall strategies.
  • Liaisons with and reporting to donors
  • Work dynamically with the grantees, and develop work, capacity building and follow-up based on needs and the situation on the ground.
  • Conduct risk assessments and risk reduction measures for the NHRF and its grantees.

Official qualifications (must have)

  • Master’s degree in social science, law, economics, or relevant field (can be compensated with long relevant leadership experience in funds mechanism).
  • Fluent in Spanish and Norwegian (might also be another Scandinavian language), good level of English needed.
  • Proven leadership experience, including leading a team/staff (min. 3-5 years)
  • Experience in working with civil society, grant making and funding mechanisms to civil society, including capacity building and networking.
  • Experience in handling donors and funds including from the Norwegian/Nordic governments.
  • Experience from Colombia, and possibly the region, when it comes to civil society and human rights defense/work.
  • Results-oriented and experience with Learning, monitoring and evaluation (LME) processes, previous work with Theories of Change is an advantage.

CONSULTANCY VACANCY – Final evaluation of the EU Human Rights Defenders mechanism

announced on 23 July 2019 that it is looking for a consultancy team to conduct an external evaluation at the end of the first phase of the Project. This evaluation should focus on documenting the impact that the EU Human Rights Defenders mechanism has had on the situation of human rights defenders during 37 months of implementation and whether the Consortium has delivered in accordance with the Project proposal and main objective of the Project. The evaluation should focus in particular on the direct support to human rights defenders under components and should compare this with other programmes and the broader EU support to HRDs. It should also provide recommendations to improve the relevance and effectiveness of the EU Human Rights Defenders mechanism in its follow-up phase of implementation. The evaluation should concentrate as far as possible on the EU Human Rights Defenders mechanism in its entirety. Education and Professional Experience

  • A master’s degree in human rights, law, social sciences, political science, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in program/project management;
  • A solid understanding of human rights and protection mechanisms;
  • Familiarity with the East and Horn of Africa sub-region and previous experience working in the sub-region;
  • Good conceptual and analytical capacity;
  • Very good budgeting, project management, and report writing skills; and
  • Ability and willingness to travel.

Languages

Fluency in English is a must (spoken and written). Fluency in French is a strong asset, and Arabic is an asset.

Location

The position will be based in Kampala, Uganda with frequent travels within and out of the country. Applicants should be eligible to work in Uganda without restriction.

Front Line Defenders seeks events organiser for 12-months

May 30, 2019

is currently seeking an individual demonstrating extensive events, communications and marketing experience to work as part of its Events and Promotions Team in the lead up to the 2019 Dublin Human Rights Festival and the 2019 Dublin Platform for Human Rights Defenders, and to provide maternity cover for the permanent post-holder.

 

Key tasks (July – October 2019, full-time);

  • manage the 2019 Dublin Human Rights Festival (planning, implementation and managing logistics; maintaining partner relations and building the Festival audience through extensive marketing and promotion; and managing staff and volunteers to support the event);
  • deputise to the International Events & Promotions Coordinator on all aspects of the 2019 Dublin Platform;
  • supporting 200+ delegate visa and travel arrangements;
  • coordination of airport transfers;
  • management at hotel and conference venue;
  • management of conference agenda, registration, interpretation, social programme and all conference administration;
  • task delegation and support to colleagues and volunteers as appropriate; and
  • supporting team in achieving all deliverables related to the 2019 Dublin Platform;
  • updating and maintaining Front Line Defenders database and working documents; and
  • offer coordination and support to the organisation as required.

Key tasks Maternity Cover (October 2019 – August 2020, part-time @ 4 days per week / 28 hours per week):

  • organise the 2020 Front Line Defenders Award including coordinating nomination process, liaising with colleagues and jury members, planning and managing award ceremony logistics and developing programme for the regional award winners and advocacy tour for global laureate;
  • make timely preparations for the 2021 Dublin Platform;
  • organise HRD speakers tours and other promotional events;
  • conduct public outreach and engagement with Irish public and specific groups;
  • maintain positive working relationships with vendors and venues; and
  • offer coordination and support to the organisation as required.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate inter alia:

  • extensive event management experience (essential);
  • a proven track record of success developing and executing marketing strategies for event promotion;
  • experience working with graphic designers;
  • experience preparing and managing event budgets with strict adherence;
  • excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • strong computer literacy (database, mailouts, spreadsheets etc); and

The role will be based at the organisation’s headquarters in Blackrock, Dublin. Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Ireland at time of application. The salary will be equivalent to Clerical Officer Higher on the civil service scale (EUR 30,089 pro rata) This is a fixed-term contract for the period 22 July 2019 to 28 August 2020.

Martin Ennals Foundation in Geneva seeks part-time Coordinator – deadline 29 April

With the departure of Michael Khambatta – planned for June 2019 –  the Martin Ennals Foundation (MEF) seeks a part-time Coordinator to lead a new, restructured team of (part-time) posts in Geneva.

Part-time 60 % (3 days per week, flexible). Languages: Fluent French and English. Start date: June/July 2019

The MEF has a Board of up to 12 members, led by a Chairperson elected by the Board. It includes a Vice-Chairperson, a Secretary and a Treasurer who together make up the Governance Committee that is entrusted with overseeing the routine business of the Foundation. The Coordinator is the executive arm of the MEF working on a part-time basis until additional resources can be found to strengthen staff capacity. Other staff include (as at June 2019) a Communications Manager and a Programme Officer (also part-time positions).
