Solomon Islands hold exhibition on human rights of women

December 1, 2014

The Solomon Islands do not figure prominently in any blogs on human rights. So this is special:  An exhibition highlighting the recipients of the US Department of State International Women’s Award was held last Saturday at the King Solomon Hotel, as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women Campaign, which started last Tuesday. It was organised by SEIF PLES (Gender-based Violence Crisis and Referral Centre) to mark International Women Human Rights Defenders Day (IWHRD).

The display includes the screening of a short film about an artist women produced by local production company Sukwadi Media. US Consular Agent in Solomon Islands, Keithie Saunders spoke at the event, commending the former recipients of the US Secretary of State award and requested past recipients of the award to nominate new nominees for this year.

RAMSI Special Coordinator, Justine Braithwaite stated:  “We should herald those women who stand up for vital human rights here in Solomon Islands…..Many have done groundbreaking work for the good of all. They come across all kinds of challenges in trying to advocate for the rights of others.”

The 16 days of activism against violence against women runs from 25th November to 10th December.
