“U.S. sanctions against ICC staff “direct attack” on judicial independence: UN experts” is the heading of a Xinhua report issued on 26 june 2020, referring to a statement by a group of UN human rights experts.
Even coming from the Xinhua News Agency – the official state-run press agency of the People’s Republic of China – this is welcome. Especially when it states that “These threats constitute improper interference with the independence of the ICC and could also have potential adverse impacts on human rights defenders, civil society organizations and victims’ representatives.“
What weakens this Xinhua report fatally is of course that it does not say that China is – with the US – among the seven countries that voted against the ICC treaty (with Iraq, Israel, Libya, Qatar, and Yemen.)
