Around the world, people are targeted for violence and discrimination because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity. Lesbians, transgender and other gender non-conforming people – in both the global North and South – are particularly at risk. This violence, including rape, extrajudicial killings and torture is omnipresent and is often undocumented and under-reported. panelists will discuss research and activist and UN responses.

The second side event. also in the margin of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York is entitled “Women Human Rights Defenders: a resource at risk?” on obligations and practical measures to support women human rights defenders and protect them from intimidation, reprisals and violence.
